Project Details:
Hope Plaza at City of Hope – Duarte sets a new standard for outpatient cancer care experience through the seamless integration of furniture, interior architecture, and user-centered design. The design vision was grounded in hospitality principles, clinical functionality, and brand alignment—resulting in a space that enhances both care delivery and emotional well-being.
From concept to completion, the furniture was thoughtfully integrated into the architectural vision. It was guided by early input from clinical leaders and end users. The goal was to design a space that felt intuitive, personal, and non-institutional, while supporting the demands of a high-volume treatment center. The City of Hope Facilities and Design Team partnered closely with our CBI Project Team to carefully select furniture that met performance, aesthetic, and operational criteria. Our longstanding collaboration created a streamlined, cohesive process over the four-year, three-phase project, culminating in a 10-week installation.
The planning approach prioritized comfort in public areas to ease stress and support different user needs. It included durable modular furniture for efficiency and flexibility and has clear visual zoning through furniture layout, finishes, and natural light access. The spaces focused on creating varied seating options that offer both privacy and choice, using commercial-grade lounge pieces with a residential feel to soften the experience, and integrating power and cleanability to support function without sacrificing aesthetics.
Clinical areas – including Treatment, Infusion, Exam, and Procedure Rooms – feature recliners with personal tech towers for ergonomic support and patient control, soft dividers and mobile furniture for privacy. All finish materials meet infection control requirements and are built for long-term durability. Staff and Support Spaces were designed with task-based solutions to support clinical workflows, like compact charting stations and efficient blood draw seating, and finishes that withstand heavy use while maintaining a consistent visual identity.
Hope Plaza is a powerful example of how design can elevate the healthcare journey and reflect institutional values through built space.
Being a part of this meaningful project – designed to serve and support the community – embodies what we strive for every day.
The project was honored with two prestigious IIDA Calibre Awards: Best of Calibre and Best in Healthcare.
